4 out of 5 stars Review of HP 802.11g printer card   January 1, 2008
The product came on time and was easy to install. The HP instructions were very difficult and getting the card to work was very time consuming. I finally got the HP460 with the card to work with one of my laptops. I could not get it to work with both.

1 out of 5 stars Product not ready for consumers   November 1, 2007

Sorry, HP, you need to finish this product.

I went ahead and ordered this product despite the numerous negative (one-star) reviews I saw here beforehand. Mistake. I had faith in the robust design of HP printers and figured my engineering background and years of experience working with printers and networking products, including wireless, would overcome any shoddy documentation. And the documentation was shoddy-- well below what I have come to expect from HP. Despite the documentation, I did get it to work-- sort of.

It "sort of" works because the killer flaw with this product is the way communication with the printer would mysteriously hang and ruin multi-page printouts. I love the HP 460 printer driver's support for two-sided printing, but when you're in the middle of the back sides of 12 pages and the job hangs, there's nothing to do but start over-- lots of wasted paper, ink, and time. Life's too short for this kind of time-eating hassle. (I did a fairly sophisticated Wi-Fi site survey to make sure the 802.11 channels used in the ad-hoc connection were clear; regardless, with a reliable link such as TCP/IP supports, a well-designed product would simply wait for any RF interference to clear and then resume printing. This product would repeatedly hang--just stop printing-- at random points during various print jobs.) Please, HP, do everyone a favor and finish this product's software/firmware.

Once I stopped using this wireless card and went back to using the alternative (hard-wired) USB connection, I couldn't believe how much I liked the printer again. (I am an admitted longtime fan of HP printers.) Using the USB cable, the printer shoots out pages 2-3 times faster than when using this Wi-Fi card, and best of all, it NEVER hangs. Ahhhhh.

I don't know if the Bluetooth card works reliably, but this Wi-Fi card doesn't. The Bluetooth wireless option is almost certainly slower than this Wireless-G card, so the USB cable may still be a better option unless you really *need* a wireless connection (or don't have a free USB port). Also, note that if you use the USB cable, you can keep your laptop's Wi-Fi (Wireless-B/G) linked to an Internet access point instead of devoting it to the printer link.

1 out of 5 stars Mac Users be Aware!   July 28, 2007

Hi,

I'm a pretty decently competent computer user, and I had lots of problems using this card on my intel chip mac book pro. The issue is that it won't correctly recognise the required ad-hoc network setup to connect the way HP designed it to on an airport internal laptop card directly to the hp printer connection. Furthermore, cell phones even a good distance away can render the signal from the printer too weak to be usable with the 802.11 wifi card.

I spent 2 hours on the phone with HP tech support this morning and they highly reccommended the bluetooth card, and stated that the wifi card is not really compatible on a mac unless you are using an airport base station IN ADDITION to your airport card in your macbook/macbook pro... this printer and wifi card are not compatible with mac classic applications either. FURTHERMORE, the HP tech recommended calling them(800-474-6836 in the usa) prior to purchase to go over the best option of wireless connectivity to the 460 printer, they have had lots of issues on macs with the wifi card.

As a usb printer, it's actually a nice, lightweight, compact printer. it's about the voume and weight of a 5 lb sack of flour, but a little flatter and longer. So, this printer works pretty well for carrying around with your mobile system, and does print very quietly and nicely. it also uses 3 of the 4 same ink cartridges as my home HP printer. I lke HP products, and have never had a problem before today. BUT, if you are using Mac OS X, you'd be better off using the bluetooth card instead of the wifi card with this printer on your system. I had to go through a lot to return these items with shipping back and forth and so on, and I'd like to spare anyone else the hassle I'm going through.

Good Luck!

Adeline
