 Unexpectedly disappointing quality November 18, 2008
I bought this Officejet K850 in April 2007 and it worked well except for a tendency to feed multiple pages, especially when using the larger 11x17 paper (which is the size we got the printer for in the first place). It ate seven sheets at once one day in January 2008 & came to a literal screeching halt--it broke something internally, a strap of some kind. HP immediately replaced it since it was less than a year old. However, the replacement (now a mere nine months later) began color streaking on the pages & gave me a "printhead needs replacement" warning for three color printheads at once. That seemed odd, but I dutifully ordered replacements plus a new black printhead too; however, installing the new ones it had asked for did *NOT* solve the problem! So the next step was calling HP tech support, again.
My next problem was that I didn't realize HP does not re-extend the warranty on replacement printers: even though neither printer lasted a year, the warranty was based on the FIRST printer, not the replacement. Caveat emptor, folks. So when I called tech services they said the second printer was out of warranty, they wouldn't replace it, and I was out $136.00 for printheads that the printer said it needed but apparently didn't. They would not give me a refund. Now I know. But I still don't know what the problem is with the second printer, but I suspect something is loose internally.
One other problem: the output trays on both these printers used to stand up nicely out of the way to help you reach the input trays, but the same plastic piece broke on each one after about a month, making it tougher to reach and load the input trays. Design flaw: hardworking piece made of plastic.
We have had other HP printers, which have given years of reliable service. This model is not up to the old standards. Good luck.

We've gone through two of these printers in less than two years. Our first one went bad in less than a year. The print quality became very poor and we started getting printhead errors that just wouldn't go away. Customer service, via e-mail and on-line chat, was very frustrating and useless. None of their troubleshooting options worked. The printer was eventually replaced with a refurbished one. Again, in less than a year the replacement printer developed the same exact issues as the previous one. We contacted customer service and after four months of following their various troubleshooting instructions, we were finally told that they would not replace or repair it due to the warranty expiration on the original purchase. The only option available to us was to upgrade to a refurbished printer and was given a list of six refurbished printers to choose from ranging in price from $269.99 to $399.00. No thank you! I absolutely do not recommend this printer. We will stay away from HP products from here on out.

Absolutely horrible. I have used nothing but HP printers for the past 16 years and have loved them. This one was a LEMON! It would not print in full color, parts were missing and in general, Ritz Camera is a disaster too. I returned the printer in its original box on December 28, 2007, paid $55.08 for shipping.
I received an Email from them today saying they sent me an RMA#Order# 1829568 (#8275-90701974-9024) which was clearly shown on the shipping label,as requested. According to UPS records, it was delivered on January 4, 2008 to Fremont, CA. On top of that another Email, Order#1829568 (#8275-90703952-5333)that I did not order, sent to me requesting an RMA#. I don't know if they're confused because of high volume or what, but I'll never do business with these people again. L. Pierce

Good if you need large printing capability. But very slow if there is color. If you have the money purchase an additional HP 6980 to print your 8x11 on fast draft mode.
Crooked feeder January 5, 2008

HP's Officejet Pro K850 Printer feeds paper crooked. It also has quite a thirst for ink.
If you print your own graphics, or photographs, I recommend the Epson Stylus Photo R1800. It is capable of handling thick paper stock, and prints beautifully (Make sure you have the right print/paper settings).
For one that is a little more affordable, I've heard the Epson Stylus R800
is also great.
